What is sport fishing?
![]()
Sport fishing is the practice of catching fish for recreational, non-professional purposes. Unlike commercial fishing, its objective is not the sale of fish, but rather the experience: contact with nature, technical improvement, and responsible enjoyment of the aquatic environment. In Spain, sport fishing is regulated by regional regulations that establish licenses, minimum sizes, quotas, and fishing seasons.
There are multiple styles of sport fishing. Some are practiced from the shore, others from a boat, or even from a kayak. In all cases, the modern approach prioritizes "catch and release" to promote sustainability and population conservation.
Types of sport fishing

Spinning (from shore or boat)
An active technique based on casting and retrieving artificial lures (vinyls, jerkbaits, and spoons). Very versatile for predators such as pike, black bass, and zander, both in rivers and reservoirs.
Carpfishing
Targeting common carp and its varieties. It focuses on baiting the carp, setting up hair rigs, and using boilies, pellets, or corn. It's usually practiced with tripods, alarms, and mats for safe catch-and-release fishing.
Feeder or coup fishing
Bottom fishing with a feeder or freehand, precise and methodical. Ideal for cyprinids in still or slow-moving waters. Requires careful selection of hooks, leaders, and baits.
Fishing from a boat

It allows you to explore large bodies of water, use depth sounders, and search for structures. Drift control and navigation safety are key. "Sport fishing from a boat" includes trolling and vertical fishing.
Fishing from a jet ski
Emergency mode in authorized areas. Extreme safety precautions, social distancing, and local regulations are required. Use only in authorized areas and with approved safety equipment.
The essentials before practicing sport fishing
- License and regulations: Process your regional license and review the current fishing ban. Respect fishing sizes, quotas, and protected species for responsible sport fishing in Spain. We can handle this for you at the TAIGA Lake Caspe campsite.
- Equipment and safety: Choose the right rod, reel, line, and lures. Bring a boat with a life jacket, depth sounder, spare paddles, and up-to-date documentation, if applicable.
- Catch and release ethics: Use hooks, rubber nets, and landing mats; minimize exposure time out of the water.

The large reservoirs of the Ebro Valley (Sea of Aragon/Mequinenza, Riba-roja) are European benchmarks for predator and carp fishing. In Aragon, TAIGA Lake Caspe is an excellent base for enjoying the reservoir and its shores, with specific services for anglers.
