The Ebro Delta is better explored by bike than by car. It sounds strange until you get there. The distances between the beach, the rice fields, and the villages are short, the terrain is practically flat, and many paths are closed to traffic.
The Ebro Delta is better explored by bike than by car. It sounds strange until you get there. The distances between the beach, the rice fields and the villages are short, the terrain is practically flat and many paths are closed to traffic. If you come with children, or if you are not a regular cyclist, there are routes that work, others that promise a lot and fall short, and a couple that get really tough at midday in July.
In this post you have four itineraries with real kilometres, difficulty by age, where there is natural shade and where to eat rice without paying tourist prices.
Comparison table
Route 1 · Riumar - Garxal - Punta del Fangar
Starting from Riumar beach. Paved route to the Fangar lighthouse, then a compacted sand track that ends in a spit of living dunes. The good part: the sea-lagoon-rice-field contrast within minutes. The bad part: the second half has no shade and in August from 11am it is an oven.
Practical detail: on the final stretch to the point there are areas where the sand turns soft and a city bike gets stuck. If you come with children under 8, it is better to turn back at the lighthouse. If you bring a baby stroller, ride as far as the lighthouse car park and leave it there.
Birds you will almost certainly see between May and September: little terns, grey herons and, with luck, flamingos in the Garxal lagoon.
Route 2 · Deltebre - Illa de Buda - Migjorn
This is the route we recommend if you are only going to do one. It leaves from the centre of Deltebre, follows the river southwards, crosses on the Buda ferry and returns along the other bank. The route passes through rice fields at different stages of cultivation: flat water in May, green ears in July, a yellow sea in September.
Suitable with children from 7-8 years old. There are areas with tall trees (the plane trees and poplars along the irrigation channels), so shade comes and goes. Bring water: there is no bar between km 5 and km 17.
For lunch, in Sant Jaume d’Enveja there are three or four rice restaurants with a reasonably priced midday menu. I would avoid the ones directly opposite the jetty, they are the ones that overcharge.
Route 3 · El Trabucador
The Trabucador peninsula is the most photographed route in the Delta. Fourteen kilometres (seven each way) along a tongue of sand separating the sea from the Tancada lagoon. Water on both sides. Only water. The feeling is of walking (or pedalling) on the sea.
Important warning: in summer it is extremely tough. There is no shade at all, the reflection off the water multiplies the heat and, if the mestral blows, the sand flies. Do it from October to May, ideally first thing in the morning. In those months it is one of the strangest and most beautiful bike experiences you can have in Spain.
Suitable with children over 10 in autumn-winter. Not suitable with a stroller.
Route 4 · Sant Jaume d’Enveja - Salines de la Trinitat
This is the sunset route. It leaves Sant Jaume, goes down to the Trinitat salt pans along quiet rural paths and ends with the sun setting over the pink lagoons. If you stay for the last light, the moon rises over the salt pans and the ride back, with a lamp and reflectors on the bike, feels like a gentle adventure.
Suitable with children from 9 years old with previous cycling experience. The water temperature in the lagoons in May and June coincides with the flamingo breeding peak, so the postcard is real.
How to sort out the bike
At TAIGA Delta de l’Ebre there is a bike hire service at reception and, even better, it can be added directly when booking the bungalow on the website. That saves the check-in queue and guarantees availability in July and August, when it usually sells out.
If you come with a dog, three of the four routes can be done walking or jogging with it outside the hot hours (Riumar - Garxal, Sant Jaume - Salines and the first half of Deltebre - Buda).
When to avoid cycling
- Strong mestral: the north-west wind in the Delta can exceed 50 km/h. If it is forecast, that day is for the terrace and rice, not the bike.
- From 12pm to 5pm in July and August: the reflection off the water multiplies the sun. Early mornings or evenings after 6pm.
- Days after a storm: some paths stay muddy for a couple of days. Ask at reception before setting off.
