A day on the boat, in Tarifa
We leave the port of Tarifa and head out to the open sea. From there, the wind—which almost never fails around here—takes the lead.
We sail and, if you feel like it, we’ll let you take the helm. We mean it: it’s easier than it looks, and almost everyone ends up steering for a while. There’s something addictive about feeling how the boat pulls from the wind.
When it's time, we find a place to anchor. We almost always end up in front of
Playa Chica, next to the Island, in calm, shallow waters. That’s where we stop. Whoever wants to can jump into the water, others can grab goggles and a snorkel to look at the seabed (we have snorkeling gear and wetsuits on board), and some just stay lying on the deck doing nothing. Both are perfectly fine.
Meanwhile, we prepare lunch. And it’s not just a half-hearted snack: olives, cured sheep cheese, Iberian ham, potato omelet that we make on the boat itself, an earthenware dish with chistorra sausage, and seasonal fruit for dessert. There is plenty to drink, and if anyone wants something specific, let us know and we’ll bring it. If you are coming to celebrate something, we’ll bring out a bottle of cava.
It’s three hours. In the end, we return to port with our hunger satisfied, salt on our skin, and our minds somewhere else.
As a couple, with children, or with friends: the plan works just as well.
