INDEX A bit of history: from the Kingdom of Granada to the power of the Vélez family
The castle was built in 1507 by order of Pedro Fajardo y Chacón , the first Marquis of Vélez, to strengthen the defense of the territory following the conquest of the Kingdom of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs. Its strategic location allowed it to monitor possible attacks by Barbary pirates and maintain control of the area.
Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and evolved until it became a monumental complex that included the Keep , the Marquis's Palace , the defensive wall and other buildings that today form part of the historic complex.
